The i-SPEED 7 Series camera used to study vapor cavitation in fluid.

High-Speed Digital Photography of Vapor Cavitation in a Narrow Gap Flow – Journal bearings are commonly used to support rotating shafts in various machines and mechanical systems, including engines and power trains. The primary purpose of a journal bearing is to reduce friction and provide support for the rotating shaft, allowing it to spin smoothly and efficiently. This is achieved by providing a low-friction interface between the shaft and the bearing, typically through the use of a lubricant. Learn how the i-SPEED 720 running at 10,000 frames per second with a resolution of 1512x1098 is being used to capture bubble formation from inception to implosion of a lubricant-type flow in the eccentric gap between a rotating cylinder and cylindrical cavity.

i-SPEED cameras used to discover a method to create uniform droplets.

This article in the December 10, 2021 issue of Physical Review Letters details how researchers in China’s Southern University of Science and Technology discovery in fluid dynamics where a laser beam splits a vertical liquid jet into uniformly spaced droplets. Laser Breaks Liquid into Uniform Droplets A laser beam hitting a column of liquid controls the droplet pinch-off at the bottom of the stream. In inkjet technology, a stream of liquid under the influence of an electric field breaks into a sequence of droplets. Researchers have now shown that such a stream can be controlled with a laser beam, which allowed them to produce highly uniform droplets [1]. The technique could lead to improved control over droplet breakup, and it demonstrates new possibilities for using optical forces to manipulate liquid-air interfaces. A narrow liquid stream emerging downward from a nozzle, like water from a tap, is inherently unstable. Surface tension amplifies random surface waves that begin at the top and cause the stream to break into droplets at the bottom. Ordinarily, the droplets have a range of sizes and shapes and are randomly spaced. However, a steady and uniform sequence of droplets can be produced by exciting the stream with an external periodic driving force, typically mechanical, acoustical, or electrical [2]. If the driving frequency matches the column’s intrinsic vibration frequency, large ripples develop along the surface that lead to uniform droplets. Congrats to our friend Linden Gledhill on a great article about his experiments with the i-SPEED 726.

For the past couple of years, Gledhill has been playing with a tiny dish of liquid that sits on a speaker. Called a cymascope, it's designed to create and tune repeating patterns of waves, like those formed in wine by rubbing the rim of a crystal glass to make it vibrate or "sing." These cyclical ripples, also called cymatics, travel far faster than human eyes can see, so he uses ultra-high-frame-rate cameras slow them down and record their secrets. "It allows you to see the individual vibration states throughout the cycle. That's pretty cool. Typically you don't get to see that," Gledhill told Business Insider. "Typically what you see is a fixed pattern or a changing pattern based on the frequencies you play through the liquid."
